How to install LED strip lights on the ceiling

With their flexibility, smart capabilities and versatile mounting options, Philips Hue lightstrips bring colourful smart light to even the most unexpected of places. Whether you run one under a bar, along a shelf or cabinet, or even attach one to the ceiling itself, a lightstrip is easy to install – and the perfect complement to your home’s decor.

Five easy steps to install LED strip lights on your ceiling

Step 1: Make sure that the location where you’ll install the strip light is close enough to a power outlet to plug in the power cable.

Step 2: Measure the length of the ceiling on which you want to install the lightstrip and make sure that your strip fits the space. Don’t forget to take corners into account!

Tip: Strip too long? Cut it to the perfect size – just be sure to cut at the marks! Too short? Extend it with a lightstrip extension and the included connector.

Step 3: Make sure that the ceiling is clean, dry and free of any dust or cobwebs.

Step 4: Peel off the adhesive backing and carefully stick the strip to the surface of your ceiling.

Step 5: Plug your lightstrip into a wall outlet, and open the Philips Hue app. Tap the three dots (…) icon and then select Add lights. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up your lightstrip.

How can I hide LED strip lights on the ceiling?

Lightstrips are not meant to be seen directly – the provide indirect lighting. For the best effects, try to hide your lightstrip.

Cove ceilings

If you prefer a more subtle look, a ceiling cove can hide an LED strip light while still showing off its beautiful glow. While some homes have ceiling coves built in, many don’t. If your home doesn’t have one, create one with decorative covers, a cove lighting kit or crown moulding.

False ceiling

False ceilings – also called dropped ceilings – hang just below the original ceiling, creating the perfect spot to tuck away a smart LED strip light. Place lightstrips behind the lips of the false ceiling where the original ceiling peeks through. If they're installed horizontally, position your strips so that they shine upwards. If they’re installed vertically, face them so that they cast their light to the side.
