FAQs
How weatherproof is the outdoor sensor?
The outdoor sensor has an IP54 rating, meaning that it's protected against dust and splashing water and will continue working in most weather conditions.
How can I go back to the factory settings of my Hue motion sensors?
In case you want to restore the default configuration of the motion sensor, or if trying to remove undesired behaviors, navigate to the edit screen of your Hue motion sensor and tap on the Reset button. If issues persist, consider deleting the sensor from the Hue app and resetting the device physically by pressing the setup button/pinhole for more than 10 seconds and then re-adding it via the Hue app.
What is the option "Do not disturb"?
There might be cases where you manually set a specific light scene in your room and do not want your Hue motion sensor to change that scene when it detects you. You can configure, independently per timeslot, to have your sensor not override those settings. If enabled, it will only turn on the configured scene if the room was previously off (and there is therefore nothing to override)
Do I need to connect electrical wires to install the motion sensor and outdoor sensor?
No. Hue motion sensors are wireless and battery powered, so you won’t have to worry about any wires. Just install the motion sensor anywhere in or around your home where you expect motion to happen and set it up in the Hue app. Your indoor motion sensor requires 2x AAA batteries, whereas your outdoor motion sensor requires 2x AA batteries. Via the Hue app you will find details about the expected lifetime of the current batteries.
How many Hue lights can I control with the Hue motion sensors?
A Hue motion sensor can control up to three Rooms, a Zone, or even your entire smart lighting setup. It’s up to you! If you prefer to control only a subset of lights within a Room, we recommend first creating a Zone out of them, to get the most flexibility in terms of creating and selecting scenes for them
What do I need to use a Hue motion sensor?
Both the indoor and outdoor Hue motion sensors require a Hue Bridge-controlled Hue setup, as well as the Hue app. If you wish to use the motion sensors to control your lights then you also need at least one Hue light (sold separately). If you wish to use your sensors for security monitoring (only applicable for the indoor motion sensor), then lights are recommended but not required.
What if my room is already bright enough when I enter?
Not a problem. The Hue motion sensors incorporate daylight sensors, which you can configure to prevent your lights from turning on unnecessarily. For example, you can choose via the Hue app what amount of daylight is sufficient for you; if the room is darker than that when you get detected, your lights will turn on as configured, otherwise they will not
Can I adjust how my Hue motion sensor detects me?
Yes. You can adjust the motion sensivity of your sensor. For example, if your indoor motion sensor is not fast enough in detecting you when you enter a room, you can consider increasing the motion sensitivity; likewise, if your outdoor motion sensor triggers too frequently due to branches swaying in the wind, you can lower the motion sensitivity
Where should I place my Hue motion sensor?
You can use a Hue motion sensor anywhere in your home that’s within range of your setup. Place the indoor motion sensor anywhere within your home, and use the outdoor motion sensor for outdoor areas. Choose spots where you expect motion to happen or that you want to monitor for security (in the case of an indoor sensor). The higher you place your motion sensor, the wider range of motion it can detect. Make sure that the front of the sensor faces the location of the expected motion. We recommend you test out the sensor before you permanently mount it
Can my Hue motion sensors turn off lights after I left the room?
Yes. Your motion sensors can be set to take different actions after a certain amount of time since motion was last detected, and these can be configured to be different depending on the time of the day. This is great to have lights turn off automatically on your toilet after a night time visit, or to return to the previous scene if you like having some background lighting all day. More advanced options are also available via the app.
Can I customize how my lights turn on when triggered by a Hue motion sensor?
Yes. You can customize Hue motion sensors to trigger different light scenes at up to ten different times of the day in the Hue app. For example, you can set a Hue motion sensor to trigger lights to come on to full brightness, cool white during the day, warm white in the evening, and low brightness after bedtime
How can I add my Hue motion sensor to my Hue setup?
You can add a Hue motion sensor to your setup by going to the Hue App > Settings > Devices and tapping on the + button
What if I cannot cover my full room with a single sensor?
Not a problem. You can group motion sensors together via "Device groups". This will allow your lights to be controlled by any of the participating sensors, such that they will turn on when at least one of them is sensing motion, and will only turn off when all of them stopped detecting you. You can combine up to 12 sensors, whether indoor or outdoor, and including also Hue Secure cameras
