How to install LED strip lights on the ceiling

With their flexibility, smart capabilities, and versatile mounting options, Philips Hue lightstrips bring colorful smart light to even the most unexpected of places. Whether you run one under a bar, along a shelf or cabinet, or even attach one to the ceiling itself, LED strip lights are easy to install – and the perfect complement to your home’s decor.

5 easy steps for installing LED strip lights on your ceiling

1. Check your power source: Make sure that the location where you’re installing the LED strip light is close enough to a power outlet to plug in the power cable.

2. Measure the area: Determine the length of the ceiling where you want to install the LED strip light and make sure your strip fits within the space. Don’t forget to take corners into account!

Tip: Strip too long? Cut it to the perfect size – just be sure to cut along the marks! Too short? Extend it with a strip light extension and connector.

3. Clean the area: Make sure your ceiling is clean, dry, and free of any dust or cobwebs.

4. Stick on the strip light: Peel off the adhesive backing and carefully stick the LED strip light to the surface of your ceiling.

5. Plug it in: Plug your LED strip light into a wall outlet. If you’re using the Philips Hue app, tap the three dots (…) icon, and then select Add lights. Follow the on-screen instructions to set up your lightstrip, and you’re good to go!

How can I hide LED strip lights on the ceiling?

Strip lights are not meant to be seen directly – as they provide indirect lighting. For the best effects, try to conceal them. Here are two ways you can do it:

1. Cove ceilings

If you prefer a more subtle look, a ceiling cove can hide an LED strip light while still showing off its beautiful glow. While some homes have ceiling coves built in, many don’t. If your home doesn’t have one, create one with decorative covers, a cove lighting kit, or crown molding.

2. False ceiling

False ceilings – also called dropped ceilings – hang just below the original ceiling, creating the perfect spot to tuck away a smart LED strip light. Place the strip lights behind the lips of the false ceiling where the original ceiling peeks through. If they're installed horizontally, position your LED strip lights so that they shine upwards. If they’re installed vertically, face them so that they cast their light to the side.
