How to choose a bedroom ceiling light

Choosing the perfect ceiling light for the bedroom helps create an inviting, relaxing atmosphere in this important space – helping you sleep better, feel more rested and wake up feeling refreshed in the morning. Choosing a smart ceiling light goes one step further, letting you create the perfect ambience at any time of day. Use these tips to help you find the best bedroom ceiling light for your home.

Should I use LED lights in my bedroom?

Yes! Long lasting, energy efficient and – most importantly – dimmable, LED bulbs are a great choice for any bedroom ceiling fixture. Place a Philips Hue LED smart bulb into almost any standard ceiling fixture to brighten and dim the lights, set any of millions of colours of light, create automations and more in the Philips Hue app. Paired with a Philips Hue dimmer switch, you can dim, brighten or change the light settings in your room with a press of a button.

What's the right size fixture for my bedroom?

The size of your bedroom ceiling fixture should correspond with the size of the area you want to light. Use this trick to determine the right size fixture for your space: measure the width and length of your space in feet, and then add the measurements together. The total number is the diameter of the fixture in inches that would look best in that space. For example, if your room is 10 feet by 10 feet, you’ll need a ceiling light that’s at least 20 inches in diameter.

How many lumens do I need to properly light my bedroom?

Since the ceiling light is normally the main source of illumination in a bedroom, ensure that it has enough lumens to go around. On average, a bedroom requires about 10–20 lumens per square foot. Multiply the square footage of the room by 10 for the minimum number of lumens you’ll need, or by 20 for a brighter look. For example, if your room is 100 square feet, you’ll need 1,000 lumens for a cosier feel, or 2,000 lumens for a brighter space. Philips Hue smart bulbs come in a range of different lumen outputs so that you can choose exactly how bright you want your space to be.
