Question 1

What is a smart light switch and how does it work?

Accepted Answer

A smart light switch allows you to control your Hue smart lights without using the Hue app on your mobile. Our smart controls also include dimmer switches and dials and can be battery or mains powered. Use them to adjust brightness, activate scenes, control multiple lights, and automate lighting routines. Our smart switches work seamlessly with all Hue lights and there are even options that allow you to control traditional non-smart lights.

Question 2

Will smart light switches work if the Wi-Fi goes down?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Philips Hue switches and controls will continue to work with your Hue lights thanks to Zigbee connectivity that works independently to your home's Wi-Fi.

Question 3

Do I need a smart home hub to use a smart light switch?

Accepted Answer

Most Hue smart controls will work without a Hue Bridge smart lighting hub. However, for optimal functionality a Bridge is recommended. Smart switches paired with a Bridge are able to control any light in your Hue system, regardless of the distance from the switch. A Hue Bridge also unlocks additional control features and ensures switches remain connected to your lights even when your home Wi-Fi is down.

Question 4

How to replace or change a light switch?

Accepted Answer

Philips Hue wireless smart switches offer an alternative solution that can be used without modifying existing wiring. Wired smart switches can be DIY installed, but professional installation is recommended.

Question 5

How to install and connect a light switch?

Accepted Answer

Installation varies by product type. Many Philips Hue smart switches are designed for quick setup and can be paired with compatible Hue lights through the Hue app. Wireless designs can often be mounted on walls, placed on magnetic mounts, or used as handheld remotes. For Hue switches that are powered by mains electricity some basic wiring is required. These switch modules are installed behind existing switches and may require professional assistance.

Question 6

What are the common issues and solutions for smart switches?

Accepted Answer

Common issues include pairing problems, connectivity interruptions, low battery levels or device configuration settings. Most issues can be resolved by checking power sources, ensuring devices are updated and confirming that the switch is properly connected to the Hue system in the Hue app.

Question 7

Can a smart switch make a regular bulb smart?

Accepted Answer

It can make the bulb or light smarter. The Hue wired on/off or dimmer switch can control and automate non-smart, traditional lights as part of your Hue ecosystem. However, it will not make the light colour-capable or able to produce dynamic light effects.

Question 8

Can I programme a Philips Hue Dimmer Switch to trigger different light scenes based on the time of day?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Philips Hue smart switches can be configured to activate different scenes based on the time of day. For example, a single button can trigger bright white light in the morning, a focused lighting scene during the day and warm, relaxing lighting in the evening.
